Caricatures used to draw attention to civic issues

Caricatures serve many purposes. Often, they are created simply for people to look at and admire, although they can also serve to draw attention to particular issues.
Recently, a number of cartoon caricatures were displayed in Agra Sunday in order to raise the prominence of a variety of civic issues, the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) reports.
The humorous images were put up during an annual cartoon exhibition in the area.
Speaking to IANS about the event, president of the Agra Cartoon Forum Manohar Gidwani said: "Our cartoonists drew caricatures that will be put up on hoardings at the main road crossings. The idea is to educate and make people aware of the intensity of urban problems."
Meanwhile, Municipal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey, who opened the exhibition, added that the efforts of artists to create their cartoon caricatures helped to raise the problems on the political agenda.
He stated: "The involvement of artists will create the necessary level of sensitivity and awareness. It would supplement our efforts to clean up the city and resolve some of the most ticklish problems that bring a bad name to the city of monuments."
Also commenting on the cartoons, president of the Wake Up Agra group Shishir Bhagat suggested that they may help to tackle the lack of civic consciousness currently felt in the area. He added the new campaign "may perhaps bring about a transformation".
In addition, Abhinay Prasad, president of Aadhar welfare society, noted that issues such as the proper disposal of litter and community hygiene need to be addressed, as does the problem of traffic violations.
In total, more than 100 images were put on display by six cartoonists. Only time will tell if their efforts and the time and energy invested by many other individuals will pay off and real change will be seen. |
