Rhonda Byrne, author of the 'thought works' as they are referred to, shot to fame with her self help book - The Secret - that has sold millions of copies worldwide. This new age bible has millions of followers across religions, geographies and cultures, with the list including celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Will Smith. Byrne who is an Australian television writer and producer had worked on several TV shows including Sensing Murder, World's Greatest Commercials and Marry Me before she shot to fame after The Secret was published in 2006.
The Secret focuses on several tenets to be followed using the power of positive thinking or the laws of attraction to attract health, wealth, and happiness to one's life. It highlights various areas is a person's life such as the self, relationships, health, money, life and the world and teaches the secret behind attracting the desired outcomes in each area using positive thoughts. It was first brought out as a movie which has been influenced by a book titled 'The Science of Getting Rich' published in 1910 by Wallace D Wattles. Shortly after the movie, came the book, which was based on the previous works by William Walker Atkinson on the same thinking. The book reached the top of the New York Times bestseller list and has sold over nineteen million copies worldwide. The success of the book was followed up by its release in DVD format which sold over two million copies.
Following the success of The Secret, the author had thousands of letters from readers, which inspired her to write the second book in the series titled The Power. This book, which was released on August 17, 2010 focuses on the most important tenet of The Secret - The Laws of Attraction. It teaches you the power to get anything you want using positive thoughts. It highlights the fact that every discovery, invention or even a change in status of relationships, wealth or career can be achieved through using the power to control the outcomes that occur. The book reached the number 8 spot on the Amazon bestsellers list a day after its release.
The two books are being heralded as classics of New Thought in the area of self help books. However, the books have received some criticism from reviewers and readers who feel that the books do not teach a realistic way to deal with problems, rather focusing on ignoring them by not thinking about them.
